Website or app: which one does your business need?

When owners first talk to us, the question is almost always the same: do I need a website or an app? The answer comes down to one thing: does your site need to remember anything about your customers?
A website is for being found
A website shows people who you are and how to reach you. It’s the right choice when visitors mostly read and then get in touch:
- a portfolio, a menu or a price list,
- your opening hours, address and a map link,
- a blog with news and offers,
- a contact link, or a simple Buy button for a voucher or a deposit.
Websites are fast, simple and cost less. Most businesses start here.
An app is for running things online
An app adds a database and customer accounts. Pick it when the site needs to keep track of something for your customers:
- Bookings: services, staff, time slots and reminders.
- An online store: products, stock, a basket and orders.
- Memberships: plans that renew and pages only members can open.
- Accounts: customers who sign in to see their bookings and receipts.
Three quick examples
A café that shows its menu and opening hours needs a website. The same café taking pick-up orders paid in advance needs an app.
A personal trainer with a bio and a contact link needs a website. Once clients book and pay for sessions online, it’s an app.
A maker selling one or two prints can use a website with Buy buttons. A full shop with stock and dozens of products is an app.
You can change your mind
Start with a website today. When you’re ready for bookings or a store, move up to an app plan: your pages, words and blog posts come with you.
Still not sure? Compare websites and apps, or ask us. We’ll tell you honestly which one you need.
